Sam never believed that he ever could be
Anything special to anyone
But he didn't mind, no, he was the kind
Who could get along fine with everyone
He had a job at the Texaco
And if you were a stranger and things were slow
He'd be glad just to put it all down
He take you out and show you around
Sam's town
Yeah, you know old Sam had a little bit of land
A quarter section or so
But the creek ran shallow and the fields lay fallow
He couldn't get a thing to grow
So when the land man came to his trailer one night
Talking percentages and mineral rights
Didn't take long for the deal to go down
They were sinking a drilling rig deep in the ground
Yeah, Sam's ground, mm
And ain't life funny? Ain't life strange?
Ain't it amazing how your life can change?
It came rushing like a big black bull
They were piping it out by the barrel-full
And pretty soon the word got 'round
Oh, down in Sam's town
Well, some time went by, the yield was high
The money just rolling in
Still old Sam stayed a simple man
You'd never know he had a nickel to spend
But he built a new wing on the old high school
The church house finally got a brand-new roof
And a park with a pool, a big playground
Spreading every bit of that money around
Sam's town
Ain't life funny? Ain't life strange?
Ain't it amazing how your life can change?
One day like the Lord just threw a switch
That well went as dry as a dust bowl ditch
And then a man came down from the government
He was wanting to know where all that money went
Sam just smiled and said, "Well, I'll be proud to show you around, boy"
Our town, come on
Ain't life funny? Ain't life strange?
Ain't it just amazing how your life can change?
Tax man auctioned off that land
But the town pitched in and they bought it all back for him
Now he's still down at the Texaco
And if you're a stranger, things are slow
He'd be glad just to put it all down
He'd take you out, he'd show you around
Yeah, Sam's town
It's Uncle Sam's town now, yeah
